Infrastructure Technician - Level 3 (Standard)

Course overview

An Infrastructure Technician provides support to internal and external customers, helping them to be productive when using technology to do their own jobs, by using tools to problem solve and trouble shoot non routine problems. The Infrastructure Technician sets people up on systems and provides support when they need it, rectifying issues to maintain the organisations productivity.

The Infrastructure Technician, Level 3 will give apprentices the opportunity to develop the following skills:
• Communication
• IT Security
• Remote Infrastructure
• Data - effectively record, analyse and communicate data
• Problem solving
• Workflow management
• Health and Safety
• Performance of hardware, software and Network Systems and services
• Processes associated with WEEE (the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive)

The apprentice will also develop knowledge in the following areas:
• Working knowledge of a range of cabling and connectivity
• Maintenance processes and applying them in working practices
• The basic elements and architecture of computer systems
• Relevant numerical skills e.g. Binary
• Networking skills necessary to maintain a secure network
• The similarities, differences and benefits of the current Operating Systems available
• Operate remotely and how to deploy and securely integrate mobile devices
• Cloud and Cloud Services
• Disaster recovery and disaster recovery plans
• The similarities and differences between a range of coding and logic
• Business processes
• Business IT skills

Delivery method:
The apprenticeship will be delivered via day release attendance at the Heart of Worcestershire College on Tuesdays from 9am to 4:30pm at our Worcester St Andrews Campus. Apprentices will also be visited in the workplace every 5-6 weeks by a College Learning and Skills Development Officer (LSDO). Every 10-12 weeks the LSDO will arrange a progress review with the employer mentor and the apprentice.

To comply with funding rules apprentices will need to commit 20% of their agreed apprenticeship duration to learning which must be off-the-job.

Entry requirements

Ideally Level 1 English and mathematics or equivalent. A relevant Level 2 Apprenticeship; or other relevant qualifications and experience; or an aptitude test with a focus on IT skills.

Level 2 English and Maths will need to be passed. if not already, prior to taking the End Point Assessment.

How will I be assessed?

During the course, the following must be achieved prior to attempting the end point assessment:
• MTA Networking Fundamentals
• MCP Installing and Configuring Windows 10
• MTA Windows Server Administration Fundamentals
• BCS Level 3 Award in Coding and Logic
• BCS Level 3 Award in Business Processes

The End Point Assessment (EPA) can only be triggered after 12 months of starting the apprenticeship and is dependent on when the employer and training provider decide the apprentice is ready. EPA is typically expected to conclude within 3 months. The employer has the final decision to progress the apprentice to EPA. The apprentice and training provider should feel confident the learning outcomes have been achieved. The EPA consists of three elements, all of which may be completed online. All assessment methods need to be passed. Each assessment method should directly assess the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the Standard. The assessor has the final decision.
